Clitics aren’t contractions, and 75% Too Tired 25% Too Lazy Lazy Naps Lounging Shirt those “contracted” forms aren’t contractions either. A clitic is a magical thing. I think the closest analogy in grammar is the affix: so you know about prefixes (come before: un-do) and suffixes (come after: national-ism). Affixes are added to their word (stem) and form one “sound word” (phonological word) and also one grammatical word. A clitic is an affix which contains its own grammatical information, rather than simply modifying the grammatical information of the root to which it is affixed.

Clitics can come before or 75% Too Tired 25% Too Lazy Lazy Naps Lounging Shirt after too (before: proclitic, after: enclitic). Clitics are similar to affixes in that they attach to a word and become one “phonological word”, but they differ in that they do not form a single grammatical word. The English enclitic -‘s (as in “It’s sunny today”), on the other hand, does contain its own grammatical information. In that sentence, the -‘s is acting as the verb in the sentence, “It (is) sunny today.” It behaves like an affix in terms of pronunciation, but it behaves like a separate word in terms of grammar. That’s essentially what a clitic is.
