You’re right on here. This is why I get frustrated when people compare the likes of Kevin Parker or whoever to a prince by saying “he plays everything on Premium H2O Delirious Shirt all his albums” when the reality is none of the things he’s playing are incredibly remarkable. Kevin’s a great producer and a wizard in the studio but he’s not really that amazing at any of the instruments he plays just very competent. Reznor is a very good musician and an incredible performer but his (fucking insane) talents lie in composition, vision and production. The man is a genius in a variety of ways but he’s at his best in the studio. Love Prince don’t get me wrong but I saw Dolly Parton in concert and she played all sorts of instruments and very well too. Some rare people just have the talent for music and can turn their hand to anything.

Prince was majorly talented but yes, there are a number of musicians who can do it. When you get down to it, most of them are derivatives of guitar, piano, or drums which most professional musicians can play. The trick comes from the woodwind and brass instruments.
